There will be three new T20 grades, including all-comers, veterans (60+) and all-abilities.
Entry fees will be $250 per team, with all games to be played on hard wickets.
Prize Money in the initial year will be $500 for winning while the runners up will receive $250, subject to the final team nominations.
All games will be play on hard wickets, with the possibility of the Final game being played on turf at the Mildura Senior College.
One game will be played per day, making it the ideal competition for social cricketers who want to bring their families to Mildura over the Christmas – New Years period.
Willowfest President Anthony Telfer said he was excited about the interest already shown in the competition by teams, urging competitors to get in early.
”We have already received some team nominations; one from a team who has not played Willowfest since 2003, with other teams showing interest from as far as Gippsland” Telfer said.
“This new T20 format could provide the impetuous to reaching our goal of 40 teams similar to the late 1980s.
“We will still continue to maintain the 50 over Turf competition for those teams wanting to play of some Australia’s finest Turf wickets.”
Telfer said the competition would attract teams from across country Victoria, NSW and South Australia.
“Our ultimate goal would be to encourage those teams from the hard wicket competition into the turf wicket competition, but first we need to get new teams to Willowfest.” he said.
“We’re hoping to start off with somewhere between 10 and 20 teams for the T20 comp and with the turf wicket competition, that would take us up to 30 or 40 teams participating in Willowfest, which is comparable to the 1980s when we had 43 teams.
“We want to bring a new excitement and new component to Willowfest and get a lot more people to Mildura to further boost the local economy.
“The more people, the more teams & therefore additional local businesses will benefit from the extra people coming to Mildura.”
Mildura Rural City Council mayor Glenn Milne also endorsed the new Willowfest T20 competition.
“This is a great addition for Willowfest,” Cr Milne said.
“The new competition will help bring more people to town for the Christmas and New Years season.
“This will in turn help drive the local economy during this busy time of year for Sunraysia.”
