THE ultimate honour in Australian cricket is to wear the coveted Baggy Green, however the best performers at this year’s Willowfest will get the next best thing.
Sporting goods giants albion have joined in the action of the nation’s favourite country cricket carnival to sponsor the Team of the Carnival for the 2014 tournament, which begins next Saturday.
The team of the carnival will be known as the ‘albion Cap XI’, with all team members and a twelfth man to be presented with an embroidered Willowfest Baggy.
“We had the brainwave last year that, rather than giving someone a dusty old medallion, why not give them a commemorative baggy cap, so the Willowfest Baggy was created,” said Willowfest president Anthony Telfer.
“albion have kindly donated 12 caps for the Carnival XI for 2014. Any player from any grade is eligible for albion Cap XI, which is all based on totals and averages in batting and bowling statistics.
“In 2013, we had one of the ladies in the carnival team for the first time.”
albion marketing manager Steven Babo said he was ecstatic to be able to support the 37th year of the famous country cricket carnival.
“We are delighted to support Willowfest for the second year running and help create a festive cricket community as the one experienced in Mildura at this time every year,” he said.
“The Willowfest Baggy Green is quickly becoming recognised in our production office as the second most popular Baggy Green behind the real thing.”
